This month continued to challenge how I think about technology leadership.
One idea in particular stuck with me: technology should not be the starting point of the conversation. The mission should be.
As IT leaders, it is easy to talk about infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud platforms, applications, integrations, and the next project. But leadership requires us to connect those investments to something bigger.
What organizational goal are we supporting? Who benefits from it? What capability are we creating? How will we measure whether it actually made a difference?
The CGCIO program describes the evolution of technology leadership from reliable operator, to service partner, portfolio steward, transformation leader, and ultimately trusted enterprise advisor. Reliability never disappears. It becomes the foundation that allows us to contribute at a higher level.
Month two built on that idea through goal alignment, connecting technology initiatives directly to organizational goals, measurable objectives, and outcomes.
That is the evolution I am enjoying most about this experience.
We are not simply learning how to become better CIOs. We are challenging one another, sharing experiences, and continuing to evolve and mold ourselves as technology leaders across North Carolina.
To be continued...
